So I'm a week late in posting about this, but if you guys remember my previous post about censorship and how I believe it has become increasingly excessive, the censoring in this episode really proves my point.
So if you have seen the 4kids versions of popular anime such as One Piece and Pokemon, you'll know that there were several things that they changed. In One Piece, every scene with Sanji smoking (which is quite a few) was changed to him having a lolipop instead. In Pokemon, rice balls were called donuts, Jinx was changed to a purple color, and certain episodes were removed completely due to concerns about more "adult themes." But remember, that in Japan, this kind of stuff aired and no one batted an eye. Let me also throw in some cultural context that comes from my few years spent in Japan. There are a LOT of people who smoke. In Japan, they still have smoking and non smoking sections. They have designated smoking areas in public areas and in general a lot of people, both male and female can be smoking everywhere. Smoking on television has never really been an issue, until now. In Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders Episode 35, the main character, Jotaro smokes and it's censored.
Now, Jotaro is technically in high school and is also a delinquent, so if you think about Japan wanting to censor that aspect in order to not promote underage smoking, it makes sense. But, Jojo's is one of the few anime to actually censor this kind of thing and also why is this the first thing they censor? Let's talk about the entire premise of Jojo's. A highschool student goes around the world with his grandfather and friends. How much school is he missing? He's also going around and fighting other people. There are also other "inappropriate" scenes that have not been censored at all. With all these other scenes that could have been censored, why prioritize this?
Besides the fact that they're focusing on the wrong thing to potentially censor, there's also the fact that it is a huge obstruction and just aesthetically displeasing. At first, I thought it might've been for stylistic reasons that they decided to put a black censor over his mouth because it makes him look more mysterious, but in the next scene, they remove it, making it clear that the black censor was to intentionally cover him smoking.
Also, if you're going to censor something, you shouldn't explicitly say that they're doing what you're censoring. The characters continually point out that Jotaro is smoking which makes the censor completely useless. This really makes me wonder, why the heck did they choose to censor it? What is the point? My previous examples of censorship from my other post actually leave everything to imagination. Character's don't describe what's happening and the censor perfectly covers what it's supposed to. All this leaves me to conclude once again that, Japan is going overboard with censorship. I'm not sure if this censor will be removed int he blu-ray but if I have to wait until the blu-ray to see something that I already know is happening, that is just incredibly ridiculous and infuriating. Japan, please calm down.
