Spoilers Ahead. Stop here |
I wrote this post while listening to Persona 4: Heartbeat Heartbreak and you can too!
1. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Kamina
If you are a fan of anime, you've seen Gurren Lagann and you know exactly what I'm talking about. The scene where Kamina dies is one of the most tragic and heartbreaking scenes in any anime ever. Kamina was undoubtedly one of the most popular, charismatic, characters that drove not only Simon but the show itself in a positive direction. When Kamina dies, it's one of the manliest, most heroic ways I have ever seen. In order to beat the overwhelming foe they are faced with, he encourages Simon who has lost all faith in himself to man up and fight with him all the while bleeding out. What results is one of the most hype and painful scenes in anime history. It's still hard to believe that he died even after all this time.
2. Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae Bokutachi Wa Mada Shiranai: Menma
Ok so technically Menma is already dead when the anime starts but who can deny that they weren't genuinely sad when she disappeared at the end. That was by far the most depressing game of hide and seek I have ever seen. That scene is forever burned in my memory as one of the most heartful, saddest scenes I've ever seen. Many manly tears were shed the day that Ano Hana's last episode aired. Just looking at this gif made me want to cry.T.T MENMAAAA
3. Katanagatari: Togame
This death was so sudden I didn't know how to really feel, but Shichika's reaction definitely made it hit home that she died. Togame was one of the best characters in the series and after spending all that time with her, it was heartbreaking to see her just gunned down like that. Even after everything she tells Shichika after she dies, it's difficult not to grieve for her.Togame was one of the things that made the anime so much fun to watch. Her death made the following episode that much more epic and emotional but I think everyone would have been fine if she had stayed alive.
Angel Beats is another anime where technically everyone is already dead but Iwasawa's "death" is one of its saddest moments. When she finally accomplishes her dream, the look on her face, the look of pure bliss while facing death is the real kicker. Right after that she just disappears implying that she was able to move on to the next world. This causes a chain of effect for everyone else who then try to figure out what they need to do to pass on. Iwasawa's last song makes the scene even more emotional making her death one of the most heartbreaking moments in anime.
5. Valkyria Chronicles: Isara
I was sad when it happened in the game and I was even more sad when it happened in the anime. Just when you think everything is going to be alright, a soldier shoots and kills Isara, the kindest most gentle soul in the entire series. The anime version of her death makes it even more sad because no one but Rosie is around to see Isara's last moments and hear her final words.
6. Full Metal Alchemist: Mases Hughes
Another great anime bites the dust. There's something about when a character discovers a huge conspiracy only to die minutes before he can tell someone he trusts about it that is just incredibly depressing. What's more is that the guy who dies in this situation is Hughes, a family man, eccentric. very likeable character. His death is made even more tragic by the fact that he was killed by Envy who transformed into his wife right before he was about to tell Mustang about a huge conspiracy. There's an amv called "rejected amvs" that has a clip of Hughes' death while playing Payphone by Maroon 5. Too soon. It's always too soon.
7. Shinryaku Ika Musume: Eiko
The feels that came out of this 5 minute scene are just....I can't even. This was without doubt one of the saddest scenes in anime ever. I suck at finding youtube videos so this is all I could find. It's not the full video unfortunately but it basically conveys what it's supposed to.
8. Saishuu Heiki Kanojo: Chise
This anime is straight up one of the most depressing anime you will ever watch. Your girlfriend gets turned into a living weapon basically against her will and all she really wants in life is to be able to live normally with her boyfriend. They try to escape but can't and she just keeps slowly turning more and more into a weapon. Ultimately she dies while accepting that she's not just a weapon but a human that her boyfriend, Shuji loves. It was a very sad ending for the anime, not made much better by the fact that the world was basically left in tatters with Shuji alone after really professing his love for Chise no matter what she became. The anime might be old but it still tugs on the heartstrings. BTW the video might show that they're happy at the end but given everything that happens, I'm pretty sure that's just his delusion.
9. Kiseijuu: Kana
This is from a more recent anime that is currently airing but this is by far one of the deaths that have affected me the most. Everyone can write Kana off as being a deluded idiotic girl but I think she was really the better choice between her and Murano. Murano serves solely as an anchor for Shinichi's humanity but she rejects who he has become and distances herself from him rather than try to really help. Kana is the only one who isn't afraid of Shinichi and treats him like a human. When Kana dies because she tries to find Shinichi and instead stumbles on a parasite, it's seriously one of the saddest things I have ever seen. Having someone die right in front of you, knowing you could have saved her if you were just seconds sooner is one of the worst feelings you can have. Of course, if Kana had carried her cellphone and contacted Shinichi, she definitely would have lived, so in that regard it's her own fault, but it still doesn't make her death any bit more settling.
10. Clannad: Nagisa
XD JK I hate Nagisa. I laughed when she died to be honest. She was one of the most annoying characters in the entire show. (I apologize to any Nagisa fans out there)
USHIO is the real person I grieve for. That child was so cute and sweet, but she had to have been born from her frail bodied mother so she got sick easily and died. Just when she and Tomoya were able to rekindle their relationship, she dies and in a similar way to her mother- in the snow with Tomoya unable to get them help.
